Iconoclastic clarinettist Arun Ghosh presents Afrocoustics & Indo-vations – a visceral, fiery, pan-cultural mix of multiple horns, koras and percussive drive.
'West Bengal meets West Africa' in powerful contemporary musical narratives that traverse the world jazz terrain whilst remaining firmly rooted within the best of eclectic and eccentric British tradition.
Special guests
UK-based kora player, singer, guitarist and composer firmly rooted in the griot tradition as a member of one of the core West African griot families. Sona is the first female kora player to come from this prestigious musical family.
Kadialy Kouyate
Kadialy is also a member of the Rafiki Jazz music collective and their acclaimed debut album ‘More Big Muzik from Over There!’ featured several of his original arrangements and compositions.
Byron Wallen (Trumpet)
Byron Wallen is "one of the most innovative, exciting and original trumpet players alive" (Jazzwise Magazine). Widely recognised as a seminal figure in world jazz, he is constantly travelling the world recording, teaching and performing.
Shabaka Hutchings (Bass clarinet)
Critically acclaimed as a versatile reedsman, equally proficient on tenor saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet, “Shabaka Hutchings is going places” (John Fordham, The Guardian, 2007)
Idris Rahman (Saxophone)
Idris is Arun Ghosh’s ‘erstwhile sparring partner’ and together they have been described as “A powerful team: a Coleman and Cherry for our times” (Mike Butler, Manchester Evening News/CityLife)
Corey Mwamba (Vibraphone)
A very physical musician, using beaters and bows as part of his repertoire. Selected for the Jerwood/PRS Foundation's 2007 Take Five Initiative produced by Serious, a significant artist development scheme for emerging jazz musicians: he was also nominated for the 2008 BBC Jazz Award for Innovation.
Liran Donin (Bass)
A member of the Mercury Prize nominated avant-garde jazz band Led Bib and regularly appears as part of Arun Ghosh’s IndoJazz Sextet & Horn E Bass Quintet.
Pat Illingworth (Drums)
An in-demand and highly versatile drummer experienced in pop, rock, jazz, world, reggae and dance genres, and a regular core member of the Arun Ghosh’s IndoJazz Sextet & Horn E Bass Quintet.
