    Afreak!

Inua Ellams presents a hypnotic evening of eerie African tales, myths and legends told in traditional styles and textured with rich haunting music.

Absorbing and atmospheric with a spooky twist, Afreak! is hosted by our new Associate Artist Inua Ellams and features celebrated storytellers Jan Blake, Tuup and Alex Oma-Pius of Iroko Theatre.

"...and out the lion's jaws came a roar: loud, thunderous and sharpened with the screams of the girl he had devoured..."

Celebrated for his use of imagery, beauty and detail, Inua has performed at the National Theatre with The 14th Tale (originally developed with the Albany) and has just completed a national tour of his second play, Untitled, which you may have been lucky enough to see at Soho Theatre in October.

'Deeply original, he remains such wonderfully generous company to keep on stage.' Metro

Jan Blake has an international reputation for dynamic, witty and exciting storytelling and has been described as a ‘storytelling tour de force’. Jan is currently one of the world’s leading female storytellers specialising in stories from Africa and the Caribbean. She began her storytelling career with Common Lore Storytellers & Musicians, and has since gone on to appear at all the major storytelling festivals in Europe and beyond.

Tuup is a well known storyteller, musician, and poet. He is also the vocal-lyricist and percussionist for the band Transglobal Underground.

Alex Oma-Puis has been working in the theatre for many years as a director, actor, writer and storyteller. In 1996 Alex founded the award-winning IROKO Theatre Company.

Afreak! also features Jojo Yeats, a world renowned Kora Player from Ghana. Jojo has played with Trevor Whats, Keith Waithe, & Nelly Furtado to name but a few.
