Arun Ghosh: The Adventures of Prince Achmed

Clarinet virtuoso Arun Ghosh returns to the Albany to perform his contemporary soundtrack to the oldest surviving feature-length animation in cinema’s history (1926).

A visual and aural feast of cinema, music and the magic of Marrakesh

Arun Ghosh presents his original contemporary soundtrack to The Adventures of Prince Achmed by Lotte Reiniger. This pioneering silhouette film takes its inspiration from 1001 Arabian Nights with hypnotic and visually breathtaking imagery.

As part of an international collaboration, he will be joined by Moroccan band Inouraz and our theatre transformed into a sumptuous ‘Bedouin Lounge’ cinema. The film will be projected around the audience and the musicians seen playing as silhouettes.

Arun’s score draws on 70’s Blaxploitation, Bollywood melodrama, classic westerns and
Hammer horror films, with elements of hip hop, jazz and North African sounds. The Adventures of Prince Achmed premiered at the Albany in 2010 before journeying to Morocco with support from the British Council.

Don’t miss its homecoming performance as part of our 30th birthday celebrations - now with the original instrumentation of clarinet, bass clarinet, double bass, vibraphone, cello and percussion plus rebab, guembri and lutar.

    History of the Project

Originally commissioned by the Albany as a co-production in association with camoci records, the premiere performance of this Cine-Concert took place in March 2010 with subsequent performances at London's Southbank Centre and Manchester's Bridgewater Hall.

In March 2012, with the support of the British Council, Ghosh took the project to Morocco. Working with local musicians, he adapted his score to incorporate gnawa, Berber and other traditional Moroccan sounds, culminating in a special Cine-Concert in the heart of Casablanca.
