Lewisham wins Mayor of London's Cultural Impact Award

Yesterday Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan announced the London Boroughs of Culture for 2019 and 2020.

He also announced Lewisham Borough had been awarded a Cultural Impact Award to run a festival of events about Creative Aging.

The festival will include films, exhibitions and events at venues and in spaces throughout Lewisham and involve artists from the UK, Europe, North America, Australia and Japan.

The festival centrepiece will be Christopher Green’s 48-hour, immersive, site-specific show that will inspire people to reimagine a utopian version of a care home. The Home will be made with older residents from the borough and was co-commissioned by the Albany.

Gavin Barlow, Chief Executive at the Albany said:

“We’re thrilled Lewisham Borough Council have successfully secured a Culture Impact Award to produce a Festival of Older People’s Creativity in 2019. It recognises the great groundswell of culture and creativity in Lewisham, and particularly our leadership in the area of creative ageing which we’re now excited to share with all Londoners. We are looking forward presenting some brilliant activity and events with partners from across the borough.”

Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, said: ‘We’re delighted to be awarded £216,000 by the Mayor of London for our Festival of Creative Ageing project which will include films, exhibitions, a two-day international conference, pop-up choirs and a large-scale outdoor performance.'

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: 'Culture has the power to transform lives, and I’m delighted that Lewisham has been awarded funding to celebrate the role culture can play in supporting older people – helping them to live longer, happier and more independent lives. Congratulations to Lewisham for putting forward such an important project – I look forward to seeing the results.'

In addition to Waltham Forrest and Brent being announced as London Boroughs of Culture for 2019 and 2020 respectively, five other boroughs received Cultural Impact Awards. We’re looking forward to working with partners across Lewisham and from the other boroughs on delivering some unforgettable cultural experiences for Londoners over the coming years!
