The Albany Cafe gets a Facelift
The Albany café re-launched this week as Caff A following refurbishment works last month. As well as upgraded facilities, Caff A features new menus with a focus on local suppliers and fresh produce grown onsite, in the Albany garden.
The Albany chose to work with Studio Raw who designed and carried out the café works and re-branding. They are also resident at the Albany – their offices are in the Albany garden!
Sophie Hardcastle, Designer at Studio Raw said ‘we always take a collaborative approach to re-designing brands and spaces and it was vital here with such a diverse set of people using the café space for different things. We loved working with Albany building users, staff and our fellow resident organisations to incorporate their ideas into the project and we hope they’ll enjoy the results as much as we do’.
Stavros Chirdaris, Head of Food and Beverage at the Albany added ‘we’re trying to offer something for everyone with the new layout and menu with a choice of healthy, local, homemade and more exotic and indulgent options. We’re really looking forward to getting feedback from our customers as we refine and develop what we’re offering going forward’.
The Albany and Studio RAW approached the project with the aim of maximizing the use of local producers and materials to contribute to the organisation’s overall environmental sustainability – they sourced much of the new wood, paint and other kit and accessories locally. The new counter top display plinths and stands to display food and consumable items are made by Happenstance Workshop, a local design company that create objects and products from recycled plastic.
The refurbished café space sits at the heart of the Albany building and hosts regular arts activity such as Meet Me at the Albany – a weekly arts and lunch club for older people - festival events, live music, markets and more. See thealbany.org.uk for forthcoming events.
You can pop-in to enjoy a delicious breakfast, filling lunch or a light pre-show meal, drink or snack. Caff A is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 4pm, Sundays and evenings – in line with events but for at least an hour before performances.
The Albany garden has weekly and monthly activity for anyone wanting to grow there own food. It is completely free with all equipment provided. Find out more on the Albany website: www.thealbany.org.uk.
The Albany is a registered charity and all income from Caff A is reinvested into Albany shows and projects which benefit the local community.
