Day One of the Lewisham Borough of Culture programme is set to get everyone involved, no matter where you are. With events taking place on the hour, every hour, live music at transport hubs as you commute in and out of work, creative challenges and workshops taking place throughout the day as well as a mass collective dance moment led by Alleyne Dance and IRIE! dance theatre. Wherever you are in Lewisham on the 28th of January 2022, you’ll experience music, dance, culture and more.
9-10am: Wake up with Live Music
As you go about your day, look out for Commotions happening across the borough, celebrating the musical spirit of Lewisham.
In partnership with Lewisham-based community music groups, Trinity Laban Composition students, local music makers and our Inspired Not Tired groups, Boundless and Voices in Motion.
From 10am: Art on your doorstep
Look out for Lewisham artists popping up in spaces across the borough, from Deptford to Downham, presenting work with and for the local community. This day-long celebration is an invitation to get involved with art on your doorstep. From ‘STOMP!’ style workshops and reclaim sculpture-making to sing-a-longs and spoken word performances, residents will be able to make their mark during Day One.
10am-5pm: Take part in a live artwork
Visit Lewisham Shopping Centre from 10am to 5pm to take part in the UK premiere of ‘Identity Tapestry’ by US artist, Mary Corey March. Map your identity across the artwork with yarn, and make your story part of this portrait of Lewisham as its people created in real time.
Midday: Get dancing with the borough
Stop what you’re doing and take part in We Are Lewisham’s first Creative Challenge of 2022! At midday, schools across the borough will be dancing the official LBoC Bop choreographed by IRIE! Dance Theatre, along to the Lewisham Anthem from The Midi Music Company. Learn the LBOC BOP in the video below.
6.30-9pm: Watch Lewisham light up with familiar faces
Stop by to catch the premiere of a new short film created for We Are Lewisham. See the borough’s identity and what it stands for projected onto key buildings across Lewisham. Look out for some familiar faces.

6.30pm: See us on the Piccadilly lights!
Head to Piccadilly Circus at 6:30pm and you’ll be able to look up at Lewisham. We are taking over the Piccadilly Lights with our new short film, celebrating the people of our borough and what we stand for.
