Our response to the EHRC Code of Practice on single sex provision

At the Albany, we are guided by our values. The first of these is to be open and welcoming - we want to create a space, both physically and culturally, where everyone can feel welcome, comfortable, and heard.

In light of the revised Equality and Human Rights Commission’s Code of Practice, which comes into force today following the recent Supreme Court ruling on the legal definitions of sex and gender, we want to reassure our trans and non-binary visitors, staff and artists that you are welcome here. Our building includes a range of toilet facilities: single-sex, mixed-gender, and accessible toilets. We continue to welcome everyone to use the facilities that are most appropriate for them, and it is not our place to investigate or pass judgement on anyone’s appearance or lived experience. 

We will only ever intervene if people are behaving inappropriately in any of our spaces, and we will not tolerate discrimination of any kind. 

We continue to make active steps towards making our spaces more inclusive, and this is an evolving piece of work, especially as we move towards a building development project. Our survey on the future of the Albany is open until 29 August and we encourage all of our audiences, building users and local communities to contribute their thoughts.
